Born in West Chester, PA, I spent a few years in Birmingham, AL, then landed in Austin, TX as a 12 year old. I have the distinction of being madly in love with my high school sweetheart (yes, I married her) and we made a life for ourselves in Central Texas until moving to Seattle a couple of years ago. I have been writing most of my life, and professionally in support of my work in management consulting, public speaking and training. In 2009 I threw caution to the wind and have devoted myself to the craft of writing.

My initial novel, Toxic Relationship, is currently being edited for publication in August, 2012 by Champaign Books. Like most writers, I have a few manuscripts tucked away here and there. I have recently completed a first draft of a new novel, a fantasy entitled Inker War.

My novel, Shaper Emergence won best novel in the Science Fiction category at the 2011 Writer’s League of Texas (WLT) literary contest, where in addition, the thriller, Toxic Relationship, was a finalist in the thriller category. Toxic Relationship is currently being edited for publication in August, 2012 by Champagne Books.

I am a member of both the Writers’ League of Texas and the Pacific Northwest Writers Association.

Who are my favorite authors and books?

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude; Isaac Asimov, The Foundation Trilogy; Umberto Eco, Foucault’s Pendulum; Donald Westlake, God Save the Mark; Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises. Other fav authors include Carl Hiasson, Barbara Kingsolver, Andrea Camilleri, Phillip Dick, William Gibson, Elmore Leonard among others. Friend me on Goodbooks.com for more

When I’m not writing, these days I’m either hiking/walking with the dog or on my scooter.  I also have a big interest in aviation (instrument rated pilot — although I don’t fly much these days), cycling, scooters (I drive a Vespa), history, cooking (probably love this too much), hiking and have recently taken up Nordic falling, I mean, Nordic skiing.

Hi, Richard, just wanted to connect with you. My family lived across the street from you on Rodney Drive. I was friends with your sister. I also love books by Asimov and Westlake (my favorite might be the first of his I ever read…Spy in the Ointment). I am one of the Black sisters. I have been in Portland for 25 years and had no idea you were right up there in Seattle. Just wanted to say hello.. Need to start reading your books. Betty Ellen Black Lane
